Fountain House, based in Youlgreave’s historic Co-operative building, is inspired by the spirit of mutual aid and shared purpose. While no longer a co-operative, we look to that model as a guide for building a nest of collaboration. Today, Fountain House is home to a growing community of creatives, makers, and artisans, each contributing their craft and vision.
We invite people to experience the richness of local specialities right on their doorstep, from handmade goods to food rooted in place. As advocates of slow travel and mindful living, we encourage visitors to take time, savour, and properly obtain the full experience. Like the bee, industrious, community-driven, and vital, we believe in working together to nurture creativity, collaboration, and local pride.
Nestled in the White Peak, Youlgreave is a village built on community, resilience, and tradition. Once known for lead mining and farming, it has always thrived on cooperation and hard work.
In 1829, Hannah Bowman and the Women’s Friendly Society brought clean water to the village, one of the first public supplies in rural England. Their spirit of care and togetherness still defines Youlgreave today.
Stone cottages, winding lanes, and limestone walls carry the stories of generations. What makes Youlgreave special isn’t just its history, but its people, a community that welcomes visitors while preserving the heart of the village.
